Why Home Fire Protection Matters

How private fire protection saves California homes during wildfires.

Private fire protection defends a home by putting water on the structure in the first minutes of a wildfire, before the fire department can arrive. A Hainy Hydrant connects to your existing water main and delivers professional fire hose pressure, so embers and spot fires get knocked down the moment they land.

The homeowners who defended their houses had one thing in common: they were prepared long before the fire arrived. By the time it did, they never even needed the fire department. Hainy Hydrant gives you that same proven wildfire defense, training, and equipment, so you are prepared instead of left hoping empty-handed.

Real Stories

100+ California homes protected by their Hainy Hydrant.

Over 100 California homes have been protected thanks to their Hainy Hydrant. In real wildfires, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire and the 2025 Palisades Fire, homeowners, neighbors, and first responders who arrived to help have used these hydrants to defend houses on the street. None of them were professional firefighters. They just had the equipment ready.

Brent Woodworth installed his Hainy Hydrant in Pacific Palisades years before the 2025 Palisades Fire reached his neighborhood. When it did, the hydrant gave him the water to defend his own house and two of his neighbors'. Brent is now Chairman of the LA Emergency Preparedness Foundation.

In the Malibu Canyon, one homeowner installed a Hainy Hydrant. His neighbors watched it work, and one by one, seven of them installed their own. Today there are eight Hainy Hydrants on that very street, the Sequit Fire Brigade, a fire-response network the neighbors built themselves.

It started in 2007, on Matt Haines' own family's property in Corral Canyon. Matt is a Malibu Call Firefighter and licensed contractor who built the first Hainy Hydrant after responding to too many fires where savable homes were lost.

Compare Your Options

Defensible space, home hardening, fire suppression, how the three layers compare.

There are three layers of home fire protection: defensible space, home hardening, and fire suppression. Cal Fire and the National Fire Protection Association recommend all three, because each does something different and the best protection combines them. Here's how they work, what they cost, and where Hainy Hydrant fits.

Layer 1

Defensible space, the cheapest layer, required by law.

The 100 feet around your home, kept clear of fuel that lets fire reach the structure. Required by California law in fire-prone areas. Best for: stopping fire before it touches the house. Limit: doesn't help once embers are landing on the structure. Do this first regardless of what else you install.

Layer 2

Home hardening, the longest investment.

The house itself, Class A roof, ember-resistant vents, dual-pane windows, fire-rated siding. Best for: keeping embers from finding a way in. Limit: expensive ($20K-$100K+), can't be added quickly, won't help if embers find the one weak spot. Worth doing, however even the best hardened homes still burn.

Layer 3
Our Focus

Fire suppression with Hainy Hydrant.

A Hainy Hydrant is ready in seconds, the moment fire reaches your property. In the first critical minutes, when most savable homes are lost, having water on the structure is what makes the actual difference. Used as designed, the fire department often doesn't even need to step in.

We've built it so any homeowner, neighbor, or first responder on the scene can operate it, no power, no app, no specialized training required. This is the finishing layer of the three, the one that does the actual saving.

All three layers work together. The right combination depends on your property and your budget.

Common Questions

Home fire protection questions, answered.

What is a private fire hydrant?+
A private fire hydrant is a residential fire-protection system that taps into your home water main and lets you fight an approaching wildfire with professional-grade fire hose and pressure, without waiting for the fire department. Hainy Hydrant systems start at $1,750 and are designed to be operated by anyone on the property: homeowners, neighbors, or first responders.
How much does a Hainy Hydrant cost?+
Starter packages are $1,750 and HERO packages with dual outlets are $2,750, plus about $500 for standard installation. It's extremely effective, tested gear that every home should have, and far more affordable than other fire protection systems.
Will it work with my water pressure?+
Most homes in Malibu and the West Side have 50-150 PSI, which is more than enough to run a professional fire hose. During your free assessment, we test your exact pressure and flow rate on site so you know precisely what your water main can deliver before you commit.
Can I install it myself?+
Every package ships with the fittings and instructions, so a handy homeowner can install it. We recommend a licensed plumber, who can connect it to your water main in about 3 hours.
Do I need a permit?+
No. A Hainy Hydrant connects on the private side of your water meter, the same as any other external faucet on your property, so no city permit or fire department approval is required in California. The fittings still use standard fire-department threads, so a crew can connect to it if they arrive.
What maintenance is required?+
Minimal. There's no electricity, pump, or moving parts on the hydrant. We recommend testing it and opening the water flow once every 6 months, and again before fire season and red flag warnings. The equipment is made in America from premium materials.
Does it work without power, wifi, or an app?+
Yes. The hydrant needs only water, so there's nothing to fail when power or cell networks go down. The optional pool pump system does use power, and it can run off a backup electricity supply.
Does it still work if the city water is lost?+
The hydrant runs on your home's water main, so if the municipal supply loses pressure, the hydrant does too. The pool pump system solves this by drawing water straight from your pool, keeping your protection running independent of the city supply. Your water main is also fed by the same municipal network the fire department works to keep pressurized during a fire, so it stays supplied as long as possible.
What if I am not home when a wildfire reaches my property?+
A Hainy Hydrant is designed to be operable by anyone on scene, no specialized training required. Many homes have been defended by neighbors who knew where the hydrant was, or by first responders who arrived and saw the equipment already staged and ready to go.
Will my homeowner insurance recognize this system?+
California carriers increasingly look for documented wildfire mitigation, and we provide installation records, system specs, and photos that you can submit to your insurance agent. We're also currently working to arrange premium discounts for Hainy Hydrant owners, which we're confident will be available in the near future, given our outcome data and endorsements from the industry.
Who installs Hainy Hydrant?+
It started in 2007 with founder Matt Haines, a Malibu Call Firefighter and licensed contractor, on his own family's property in Corral Canyon. Today, installations are handled by licensed plumbers who are highly experienced in fitting Hainy Hydrants on all kinds of properties.
