Home hardening is the term for everything you can do to a structure to make it harder to catch fire. It's the foundation of wildfire defense, and it works. But it's only half the job.
What Home Hardening Actually Is
The components are well documented and CAL FIRE has standards for most of them:
- Class A roofing (asphalt, tile, metal): doesn't catch from embers
- Ember-resistant vents (1/8-inch mesh): keeps embers out of attics and crawlspaces
- Non-combustible eaves and soffits: removes a common entry point
- Composite or non-flammable decking: removes a major fuel source against the house
- Dual-pane tempered windows: less likely to crack under radiant heat
- Defensible space (Zone 0, 1, 2): clears fuel away from the structure
These are passive defenses. They work even when no one is home. They don't get tired, don't need power, and we recommend you follow these as closely as possible.
What It Doesn't Do
Hardening makes ignition harder. It doesn't make it impossible. And once an ignition does happen, hardening doesn't extinguish the fire.
A 1/8-inch mesh vent stops most embers. It doesn't stop all of them. Class A roofing doesn't catch from embers, but debris in a roof valley still does.
The simple frame: Home hardening lowers the probability of ignition. Active defense puts out the ignitions that do happen. You need both.
Where Hardening Stops
Hardening lowers the chance of ignition. But it doesn't react to anything. The smoldering ember in a gutter, the patio cushion catching, the small flame at the base of a wall, hardening can't notice them, and it can't put them out.
Once embers start landing, the problem isn't probability anymore. It's action. Either someone with water is there in the first minutes, or they aren't.

Active Defense Closes the Gap
A Hainy Hydrant, the private fire protection equivalent for active defense, pairs with home hardening, not against it. Hardening lowers the probability of ignition. A Hainy Hydrant gives you, a neighbor, or an arriving first responder the equipment to put out the ignitions that do happen, with 50–150 PSI and 30+ gallons per minute of water from your existing main, designed and tested by an active Malibu Call Firefighter to be easy to use by anyone on the scene.
Home hardening is essential. It's not enough.
